Failure of a bitch to conceive and resorption of puppies
Failure to conceive
There are bitches that let themselves to be covered but fail to conceive, i.e. they do not get pregnant. These are mostly bitches that get in heat every 3 to 4 months, and behave restlessly and overly self-confidently; therefore we must assume that perhaps there are one or more cysts on their ovaries.
However, there is also the possibility that the bitch stops or puts off her heat for psychological reasons. There is an example where 3 years ago 20 Shiba bitches were covered by different males in the same period, and – for until now unknown reasons – 19 of these bitches failed to conceive. It is only known that all these bitches ate the same food, and that during their next heat all of them got puppies again.
About the number of puppies
There are bitches that bring forth one or two puppies time and again, and there are bitches that bring forth more than eight puppies during every heat.
Resorption of puppies
Time and again, there are bitches that resorb their puppies in situations of stress. Instances of situations of stress:
- Changes in the usual surroundings of the bitch
- Vaccinations during pregnancy
- Worming during pregnancy
- Visits to the veterinary, examination by ultrasonic
- Long travels
- Changes in food during pregnancy e.a.
However, there are also bitches that resorb their puppies regularly.

The AKITA INU in Japan
A short history ( 1900 - 2005 )
The prototype of the modern Akita was a hunting-dog called „MATAGI INU“.
He had intensely red hair, a splendid coat, and a white mask.
There were, however, also brindled dogs with a white or fair mask.
From 1900 on, these dogs were called „AKITA INU“ (dog from the AKITA region in the north of Japan).
Until about 1960, the Akita Inu was bred in Japan without guideliness.
After 1960 the new type of Akita Inu was created and consolidated. in Japan
In looks, colour, and quality of coat, it very much resembles its ancestor, the Matagi Inu.
The Akitas must not be too fat, they must have a very thick coat and be of one colour. They must not be spotted (KUROKI 1988).
This Akita type has been bred since 1960; the number of the Akitas lept to more than 100.000.
The hair colour of the Akitas is red, brindled, or white.
The most important Akita Clubs in Japan
1.Akita Inu Hozonkai (AKIHO) Club.
It was founded in 1927 and became more and more significant from 1960 on.
In this Club the modern Akita type was created and consolidated.
In 1988 about 90.000 Akitas were registered with this Club.
The birth rate was about 10.000 Akita puppies per year.
Akita exhibitions were organized on the national level twice a year, and on the prefectural level 80 times a year.
Every year there were four entertainment meetings for the club members, and three study meetings for the 50 judges, the experts, and the breeders.
In 2004 only slightly more than 20.000 Akitas were registered in the Akiho Club.
Only 2233 puppies were born in 2004.
2.Nihonken Hozonkai (Nippo)
It was founded in 1928 and was of importance for Japanese breeding only up to 1945.
In this Club the pure DEWA type was bred in all colours.
After 1948 it lost its significance, because at that time the Kyokai Club became important, and besides the JKC was founded.
3.Japan Kennel Club (JKC)
It was founded in 1948.
In 1988 ca. 10.000 Akitas were registered there.
In 2004 only slightly more than 2.000 were registered.
The JKC acknowledges the pedigrees of the Akitas that were bred in the Akiho Club, and – on request of the particular breeders - it grants FCI/JKC pedigrees for the dogs born in the Akiho Club.
In 1988 382 puppies were born in the bounds of the JKC; in 2004 only 299 were born.
Presently the JKC organizes a FCI-Asia International Dog Show once a year,
and „Akita-bukai-ten“, Club Exhibitions, 2 - 3 times a year..
Note:
The colour of the Akitas bred in Japan is still
60 % red, 30 % brindled, and 10 % white.

SEBACEOUS ADENITIS with AKITAS
My own experience with Sebaceous Adenitis (SA)
- Sebaceous adenitis can break out regardless of the dogs’ age.
- All medical examinations show negative results, except histopathological examinations of skin biopsy specimens.
Factors that cause SEBACEOUS ADENITIS
- Keeping the dogs inappropiately, e.g. in a cage, in heat, in the house.
- Errors in feeding
In earlier times in Japan , the Akita was fed rice, vegetables, and small fish, and so it
remained healthy..
Instant food (food from tins and dried food) with too much animal proteine bring about
stomach and bowel problems, immune deficiency, and skin problems.
- Change of climate
The Akita was brought from Northern Japan into the southern parts of the country.
This resulted in a weakness in coat production; hair and skin problems arose.
Before important dog shows, the Akitas were transferred to the north of Japan for 3 – 4
months. Thus the undercoats of the dogs could regenerate.
The dogs got a marvellous coat.
- Stress and oppression
The Akita is a dog that possesses dignity and self-confidence. It knows what it has to do.
On dog training fields, it is exposed to situations of heavy stress.
Dog shows and long travels are stress situations, too .
These cause psychological problems with the Akita and weaken its immune system.
- Incompatibility of the yearly vaccination due to its additives (preservative).
In the vaccination records of several veterinaries it was stated that the additives of the
yearly vaccinations can cause skin problems with a statistic probability of 99%
Besides, autoimmune diseases are caused by vaccinations with a statistical probability of
95%.
- Allergenic substances in the house and its surroundings
- Constitution and heredity
Measures against SEBACEOUS ADENITIS
- Keep and feed the dog appropriately
- Avoid stress
- Reduce the risk of infections and treat minor lesions or infections in their initial stage strictly without delay
- Refrain from vaccinations with live-attenuated viruses
- Choose antibiotics only on the basis of antibiograms.

Case History of my Akita bitch „FUJIHIME OF KAMISAKUSOW“
Ordinary name: HANA
Born: 08 May 1988 in Japan
Breeder: Mitsuo Endo
Imported:. 07.1988 through Mr Kuroki
Comment:
HANA was no kin to any of my other dogs, and she was not used for breeding.
She passed the exam for a companion dog, received CACIB at several exhibitions in Germany and abroad, and got the score „Excellent“ from the Japanese judge Mr Kariyabu at the 1991 world exhibition in Dortmund in spite of the state of her coat at that time
Case History
Veterinary clinic No.1 ( May 1989 - March 1990)
When the bitch was 10 months old, she got skin problems.
Initially she had pustules, then crusts and inflammations on her belly and between her hindlegs.
A test for allergies had negative results.
There was always a strong itch.
The veterinaries of the clinic said: Puberty acne.
Treatment: Diet food (3 weeks rice with lamb), Criniton, Penochron, anti-flea Fiole, detailed blood picture, all of no avail.
Veterinary clinic No.2 (March 1990)
Yearly vaccination, a biopsy that got lost, then another biopsy by theUniversity of GIESSEN with negative results.
The skin problem deteriorated.
Histopathological diagnosis: „ Moderate infiltration of mononuclear cells. In this specimen no hyperpigmentation recognizable, an allergic process cannot be excluded.“
A test for mycosis was performed and examined in veterinary clinic No.2.
The veterinaries diagnosed trichophytes. Now the bitch was treated with Likuden tablets against fungi, she got baths with Imaverol; my house was completely desinfected against fungi, the carpets, blankets etc. were removed. No recovery whatsoever was detected. The diagnosis had been wrong.
Veterinary clinic No.3 ( September 1990)
Specialised in parasitology.
The bitch was examined for fungi and parasites. Result: no fungi and no parasites.
The bitch got diet food. No recovery.
Veterinary Clinic No.4 (October 1990)
Skin grazings sent to the university clinic in Munich. Result: no parasites, no mites, no fungi.
Hana got dragées against pruritis. After ca. 2 weeks of diet and pruritis dragées the itch ceased. However, after discontinuing the dragées the itch began again, even stronger than before.
The muzzle and the ears became inflamed. For a short time, the belly was without inflammation..
Then inflammations began to spread in the axillas, on the forefeet and around the root of the tail.
Another test for allergy was made. Diet food: 1/3 quark, 2/3 potatoes and Betnesol.
The allergy test resulted with allergies against: wool, dandruff, dust, hair…
Injections against allergy followed, besides Silicea D and Unizink 50 (resp.) 2 tabl. per day, and 1 pruritis tabl. per day.
Again a blood picture: Everything normal.
There followed an otitis in both ears, pustules around the mouth, and a new phase of inflammations on the belly.
Once again examinations in the laboratory LABO KLIN No.5 (Jan.1991)
As nothing had been found, they only made proposals on what kind of further examinations could still been made.
Homoeopathic clinic No.6 (March 1991)
Attempts were made to excrete the poisonous substances by derivation.
Additionally Na muriaticum and Hormeel were administered against a hormonal disorder.
It was all of no avail.
Clinic No.7 (April - June 1991)
There followed examinations, a taking of a blood sample, an examination of matutinal urine, diet food - all of no avail.
Clinic No. 8 (in Fürth) (August 1991)
Eczemas on the belly, the breast, the feet. Injection of Colibiogen and administering of sulphur tablets.
Hormonal disorder!!!
The whole skin at the belly, under the axillas and between the hindlegs was flaming red.
The wounds were dabbed with calendula oil; Sulphur D6 was administered. Baths with Peroxyderm and 2 days later with Dermilen were made.
Result: Bacterial rushes on the whole body.
Treatment with Apis followed. Additionally Tribrissen dragées were administered.
The bitch’s health deteriorated from day to day.
Dermatologist No. 9 (for human medicine) (September 1991)
Sent 3 biopsy specimens to a laboratory. No result.
Clinic No.10 (again in veterinary clinic No.2) ( October 1991 - 1997)
The bitch was castrated; against the itch Prednisolon was administrated.
Again a mycosis was diagnosed. Not true.
It was SEBACEOUS ADENITIS.
Clinic No.11 Birkenfeld
I was told to wash all dogs with Wellcare Shampoo against fleas, then powder them against fleas all 3 – 4 days. Spraying the whole house with vet-ken pump spray in order to treat the surroundings because of flea attacks brings 4 months of longtime protection against fleas.
The dog blankets should be impregnated with Alugan.
I was told to mix cold-pressed plant oil into the dogs’ food.
Hana had a flea allergy, they said. I was told to administer no medicines.
A month later an allergy test against fleas was made.
Result negative - because there were no fleas there.
University clinic Munic No.12 (December 1992-December 1993)
Detailed blood picture: result negative.
Examination of the thyroid gland: result negative.
Allergy test: negative
Skin biopsy: Eccema erythematosum.
Diet food: cooked chicken without skin, mixed with natural rice.
As a result the itch weakened.
Clinic No.13 Zeil am Main ( May/June 1993)
Suppurating eczema at the flanks between belly and thighs.
Treatment with Cortison plus Efaderm
The bitch was presented to a congress of 62 doctors from different countries who also practise homoeopathy..
They all said that the bitch had psychological problems and therefore should be treated with Ignatia, first with D200, then with D1000.
I administered her the tablets but unfortunately it was of no avail.
Specialised veterinary for pathology, doctor No.14 (January 1997)
On the basis of examined biopsies a chronic pyodermia and an allergy against staphylococci were diagnosed.
No symptoms of an autoimmune disease or a mycosis were found.
General veterinary No.15. (May 1997)
He suggested to treat the bitch with autoblood.
The treatment came to a fatal end because the blood was spoilt in the refrigerator and the bitch thereby contracted a general deep pyodermia. The antibiotic that was administered did not take effect.
In order to make her not suffer any longer she had to be put to sleep on 04 July 1997.
Comment: This was a summary of the case history of my dear bitch HANA.
If I had wanted to go into detail I could have written a bulky book about her case history.
Concerning her (at that time) still unknown disease in the final stage, SEBACEOUS ADENITIS, neither the many veterinaries that I consulted in her case nor my Japanese Akita specialists, e.g. Mr Kuroki or Mr Hirose, could help me .
Mr Kuroki only said to me: do away with sick dogs and buy other ones
During the time of my bitch Hana’s disease I bought and read a lot of veterinary books in order to be able to help this bitch and also the other dogs.
Besides I started a file for each one of my Akitas in order to collect diagnoses of diseases, case histories, results of examinations as well as all bills for consultation of veterinaries and for medicines.
